Educational dreams made reality with Ron Larkin Scholarship

Friday, September 11, 2015 — Parents, families, Ottawa Community Housing (OCH) tenants and city councillors alike gathered in the Clementine Towers at 1455 Clementine Blvd. on Thursday, September 3rd, for the annual Ron Larkin Scholarship award ceremony.

The Ron Larkin Scholarship Fund was established in 2008 in honour of ex OCH CEO Ron Larkin. Having served for many years in the field of education, Mr. Larkin believes strongly in the principle of equal opportunity to education. Since 2008, 70 OCH tenants have received the $1,000 scholarship.

“This scholarship sets driven, community-minded individuals on a path to higher education,” expressed Mr. Larkin. “I believe the first step toward personal success is strong education and these well deserving recipients are now well on their way. I wish each one of them the very best.”

The recipients were selected based on their community engagement, life experience and current educational enrollment status. Each recipient demonstrated an enormous amount of dedication to bettering their communities, ranging from volunteering with the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa, helping the homeless, participating in CHEO telethons and preparing meals for the Shepherds of Good Hope.

“Recipients give up countless hours of their free time to help others and are rewarded by being helped to achieve their educational goals. It is a great dynamic that the Foundation would like to see implemented in other areas of our communities – give back to get back,” stated Howard Whittaker, OCH Foundation Executive Director.

Ten scholarships are awarded annually by the OCH Foundation who strives to help the 32,000 tenants living in Ottawa Community Housing neighbourhoods break the cycle of poverty.
