Scholarships Awarded to Youth in Social Housing

Monday, November 21, 2016 — Proud parents, families, supporters, and city councillors gathered at the Dr. F.J. MacDonald Catholic to celebrate the 10 Ron Larkin scholarship recipients at the Ottawa Community Housing Foundation’s annual award ceremony on Wednesday, November 9th.

The Ron Larkin Educational Fund was established in 2008 in honour of past Ottawa Community Housing Corporation CEO, Ron Larkin. Since the fund’s inception, the OCH Foundation has awarded over 80 scholarships to well deserving residents of OCH communities.

Wayne French, Chair of the OCH Foundation Board of Directors, was inspired by the great challenges the recipients have overcome. “These tenants have demonstrated resilience at overcoming obstacles, a passion for learning, and a commitment to their communities”, expressed Mr. French. “We are extremely proud of them for their many contributions to our great city and commend them determination in taking hold of their own individual destinies.”

The scholarship fund’s impact has been significant as passed recipients have started to come forward with aspirations of attaining post-graduate degrees and accomplishing impressive professional goals. Bilan Farah, a recipient of the award in 2015, returned to offer words of encouragement to this year’s class.

“Although I was not the most privileged child growing up, I wish to mobilize my current and future successes. By giving back to my community, I am able to inspire individuals to prevail and succeed”, explained Mrs. Farah. “My advice to students is to never give up. Even if it seems like nothing is going your way, always remain hopeful. It is about how badly you want it; how hard you are willing to work in order to reach your goals.”

Recipients are selected based on their community engagement, educational aspirations and financial need. The scholarship receives over fifty applicants per year, all of which are fully deserving of our support. If you would like to help someone near you access higher education, donate here.

With a focus on education, employment and community engagement, the Ottawa Community Housing (OCH) Foundation brings together community leaders to help families, seniors, and individuals achieve personal success.
