HOP ON BIKES

What is Hop on Bikes?

Do you remember your first bike? The freedom to explore your neighbourhood, the thrill of independence, and the simple joy of being out and about. Through Hop on Bikes, we help tenants living in Ottawa Community Housing (OCH) communities experience that same sense of freedom, mobility, and connection by providing free refurbished bicycles, helmets, lights and locks.

Hop on Bikes is run in partnership with re-Cycles Ottawa and Ottawa Community Housing Corporation (OCH). This program began in 2020 as a small initiative to support children during the pandemic. In its first year, we distributed just 30 bikes. Since then, Hop on Bikes has grown into one of our core programs and now serves people of all ages. In 2025, 373 tenants received bikes; each one opening the door to greater freedom and mobility.

What does Hop on Bikes do?

Hop on Bikes provides tenants of all ages with refurbished bicycles, helmets, lights and locks. Bikes are distributed directly in communities through Hop on Bikes events, where staff and volunteers help residents select a bike and ensure it’s safe to ride by adjusting seats, handlebars, and performing basic safety checks.

Following these distribution events, we also offer place-based learn-to-ride sessions. These are only organized on the community’s request and teach new riders essential skills and safety precautions, along with basic bike care tips. These sessions ensure riders are confident, safe, and ready to enjoy their new bike.

Why does Hop on Bikes matter?

Hop on Bikes combines mobility with sustainability. Many of the bikes we distribute have been diverted from landfills, giving them a second life and reducing environmental impact. Introducing children and youth to cycling at a young age encourages them to view bikes not only as play, but also as a cost-effective and sustainable form of transportation. For adults, bikes provide an affordable and reliable way to get to work, appointments, or run errands, while promoting a healthier, greener community. A bike is more than just transportation; it’s freedom, independence, and connection to one’s community.
