From Uncertain Futures to Bright Tomorrows: Stories from Youth Futures Alumni

“I am older and wiser. I am working, studying, and loving life,” a past Youth Futures participant said, reflecting the impact the program has had on their life. Youth Futures is a transformative journey for young people, guiding them from a place of uncertainty and solitude to a realm of self-discovery, professional competence, and the courage to step into higher education and the workforce. More than that, it fosters a sense of community and nurtures friendships that extend far beyond the program’s duration.

The bilingual program runs for six months and is available for children from low-income families entering college and university. It offers leadership training, mentorship, job skills training, and a six-week field placement.

Seventeen years ago, the program began with a simple idea: every young person deserves the chance to dream big. In 2008, just five students joined our first cohort. Today, Youth Futures has grown into a vibrant community of more than 150 youth each year, with over 1,400 participants since it started, testament to its success and impact.

On June 11, the OCH Foundation hosted a special gathering, welcoming over 40 alums. This event was more than just a reunion; it was a platform for our graduates to reconnect, network, and reignite their bonds with each other, the OCH Foundation team, and the partners who contribute to the program’s success each year.

“We believe in the power of collaboration, and we’re proud to create spaces where past participants can share experiences, exchange opportunities, and keep building each other up,” said Traci Spour-Lafrance, Acting Executive Director of OCH Foundation, expressing gratitude towards the community and partners for their continued support.

Many participants said before the program, they felt they didn’t have the skills for college or university and were uncertain about the future; now, they are well on the way to a successful career path – with a network of lifelong friends, they gathered from the experience.

As we look at our alums working, studying, leading, and giving back, we’re reminded that hope, opportunity, and connection can change everything. Here’s to the next 1,400 Youth Futures stories yet to be written.
